The painting depicts a transitional period: the transformation of one state into another. It is an attempt to convey the birth of something new. The process of rebirth is always difficult and painful, which is reflected in the inscriptions on the canvas. The most important element is the hair-snakes, which are meant to free the heroine from the blue hands. Yet to the viewer, it may seem as if they are acting together. This is where the core conflict emerges: the girl is subjected not only to external pressure, but also to internal pressure — she torments herself. Perhaps the hair-snakes could overcome this force, but not yet. The heroine herself is not ready to place her bets on this confrontation; for her, the outcome is fifty-fifty. Her eyes reveal this: one is closed, the other is open. But there is always hope, and it is no coincidence that something is “ripening” inside the martyr.
