This work is an antithesis to the famous Trinity. Why this reference in particular? Because we see three hands surrounding the central figure. Their presence becomes the artist’s hint that there is no symmetry in the world. The main difference from Rublev’s Trinity is that, in this painting, the hands promise nothing good to the central figure. The heroine is completely dependent on them. One palm holds her body, another tickles the back of her head with its fingers, while the third — red and the most threatening — has intentions so disturbing that they are almost frightening to imagine, as if it wants to break the poor girl’s spine. The overall theme of the painting is the fragmentation of human existence, uncertainty, and instability. Even though the figure rests on one of the hands, does she have any guarantee that she will be held? All of this conveys a mood of fragility and insecurity. The heroine herself seems to understand that her fate does not promise anything good.
